Conservatives Call for Action on East Berks College
Despite opposition by the local MP Theresa May, and
Conservative councillors, East Berkshire College is due to close this summer.
Losing the College is bad enough, but now local residents will be faced with the
almost certain prospect of development on the site.
Theresa May has already called for the council to
develop a planning brief for the site, in consultation with local people. She
explained, "This is an important site in the heart of Maidenhead and opposite a
conservation area. People have lived with the unsightly college building for
years but now there is a chance for something better. It would add insult to
injury if the College was replaced by development which local people did not
want. Whatever happens I believe that local people should have their
say."
Newly elected Conservative Ward Councillor Christian
Harris said "I wanted the College to stay, but it's too late now. We must turn
our attention to what will happen to the site. I don't want to see an
unsustainable housing development on the whole site. I believe we need to keep
some community facilities here and I want to see the Council consulting local
people. But I need your views. Fill in the form overleaf and send it back to the
address shown. Then we will know what you think about this important
site."
