Cafe Sci: "Using gene therapy to repair vision"

Monday 27 Feb 2017
19:00 to 21:30
The Tea Bar, 19 London Street, Basingstoke
RG21 7NT       (Map)
England

Why not come along and find out what the future might hold for research into the restoration of vision at tonight's talk titled "Using gene therapy to repair vision". The talk starts at 7.30pm and will be lead by Harry Orlans from the charity Fight for Sight

Please arrive from 7.00pm onwards to purchase cakes, teas, coffees and drinks etc before the talk starts.

Summary

In this talk, Harry Orlans from Fight for Sight will be exploring current clinical trials, touch on his own research and also cover a bit about novel technologies to restore vision.

"Fight For Sight" runs a network of 150 eye researchers and clinicians whom they enlist to speak at a range of conferences and community events throughout the year. There is incredible work going on by our UK eye research community, leading to major advances in stem cells, gene therapy, surgical techniques and bionics. Science, medicine and technology are rapidly coming together to bring us closer to preventing, treating and, ultimately, reversing sight loss.

The speakers are based at leading hospitals and universities across the UK, and speak regularly at large events as well as community-based/patient focused events.

VENUE AND FORMAT

The Tea Bar will be open for at least half an hour before the talk which starts at 7.30pm, so you can get yourself a drink and have a chat with other participants. The discussions will aim to finish around 9.00pm, though everyone will be welcome to stay around and have a chat with the speaker afterwards ... and indulge in more of the Tea Bar's delicious cakes.

The format of the evening is usually a talk of 30 to 40 minutes, followed by a short break so the audience can refill their glasses, before questions and discussions about the talk.

Entry is free and open to everyone, but we do encourage you to buy a tea, coffee  and cakes to show your support for the The Tea Bar who sponsor the meeting by providing the venue.

Cafe Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore and debate the latest ideas in science and technology.
