Skeptics: "Evaluating treatments for dyslexia"

Thursday 23 Oct 2014
19:15 to 21:00
Copa, 76-78A Kings Road, Reading, RG1 3BJ

Science enthusiasts of Basingstoke are invited to this talk by Prof Dorothy Bishop from the University of Oxford for Reading Skeptics in the Pub. The talk is titled "Evaluating alternative treatments for dyslexia: a skeptical approach". Please arrive by 7.15pm for the talk and discussion which starts at 7.30pm.

Dororthy Bishop is Professor of Developmental Neuropsychology and a Wellcome Principal Research Fellow at the Department of Experimental Psychology in Oxford and Adjunct Professor at The University of Western Australia, Perth.

The primary aim of her research is to increase our understanding of why some children have specific language impairment, a condition diagnosed when the child has unusual difficulty in language acquisition, despite normal development in other areas.

If you Google ‘dyslexia’ you will find a confusing array of information about diagnosis and treatment. Many websites claim that their intervention is neuroscientifically-based, and many propose ways of treating dyslexia that do not involve training children to read. I will consider some general rules of thumb that can help sort out the good, the bad and the frankly weird from among this wide range of possibilities.

Organised by the Berkshire Skeptics Society, convenors of Reading Skeptics in the Pub. The Reading Skeptics in the Pub programme is available online at www.reading.skepticsinthepub.org
