Reading Cafe Sci would like to extend a invitation to the Basingstoke Friends and Cafe Sci followers to attend this free talk. Tonight there will be a talk by Laura Holland who is the Director of Communications at the Rosalind Franklin Institute about the Institute's name sake and incredible and inspiring women in science- Rosalind Franklin. The presentation will be followed by a Q and A session.

FREE ENTRY. Restaurant is open from 6pm

Summary:
"The Rosalind Franklin Institute is a new national institute, devoted to developing innovative technology to solve some of the biggest challenges in life science. Many of our challenges relate to our ability to see the structures of life more clearly; from novel imaging techniques which will allow us to see better into living systems, to the atomic detail of a drug binding with a target protein. This ability to visualise the inner workings of life, and to draw new understanding from this, is one of the reasons we are named in honour of Rosalind Franklin. A great experimental scientist, Franklin worked on a number of diverse scientific problems, most famously DNA, bringing incredible experimental skill, technological expertise and knowledge from across the sciences. The Institute's Director of Communications will discuss how the life of Rosalind Franklin, and her diverse work - beyond the discovery for which she is best known, has inspired this new Institute"

Format and Venue:

Smokin' Billy's will be open for at least half an hour before the talk which starts at 7.30pm, so you can get yourself a drink and have a chat with other participants. The discussions will aim to finish around 9.00pm, though everyone will be welcome to stay around and have a chat with the speaker afterwards.

The format of the evening is usually a talk of 30 to 40 minutes, followed by a short break so the audience can refill their glasses, before questions and discussions about the talk. Entry is free and open to everyone, but we do encourage you to buy drinks to show your support for Smokin Billy's who sponsor the meeting by providing the venue.

Cafe Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore and debate the latest ideas in science and technology.
