Come along and support this event which is being run as part of our groups contribution to British Science Week and the Reading Science Festival. This year the British Science Week runs from March 10th to 19th 2017.
Are you interested in finding out how your favourite beers are created and what gives them their distinctive flavours? Why not come along and find out what goes into the process of making your favourite beers from the master brewers in local breweries. We have master brewers talking about the ingredients and science that is required to provide a quality beer product.
Summary
Beer brewing is an age old activity that has taken place since around 6000 BC. Archaeological evidence even suggests emerging civilizations such as the ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians brewed beer! Today, brewing is seeing a global resurgence on both a professional and amateur level, garnering increasing media attention.
In 2015, there were over 1,200 breweries in the UK, 4,000 in the US, 700 in France, and many more elsewhere. Join us for our first public interest lecture of 2017 where we will debate the art of creating good beer.
In this panel discussion, a panel of professional master brewers will lead you through a journey of the brewing process from their perspectives, exploring the science within. They will highlight their reliance on chemistry and chemists for their innovation and insight to continually improve the quality of their beers (sharing a few anecdotes along the way!).
This is a event is sponsored by the British Science Association:
Members of the local Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) are also being invited to attend.
VENUE AND FORMAT
The Barn at Viables Community Centre will be open from 7.00pm so you can get yourself a drink and have a chat with other participants. The panel presentations will start at 7.30pm for about an hour and a half including a chance for Q&A. The presentations will cover different aspects of the modern brewing industry. We will aim to finish by around 9.30pm as we have the venue booked until 10pm.
After the talks there will hopefully be a chance to sample a few of the beers discussed over the evening. Everyone will be welcome to stay around and have a chat with the speakers afterwards ... and indulge in more of the Community Centre's refreshments.
Entry is free and open to everyone, but we do encourage you to buy a tea, coffee beers etc to show your support for the Viables Community Centre who are providing the venue.
We would welcome any assistance from Cafe Sci members who are willing to help from around 6.00pm to make the evening a success. Contact Bob if you can spare some time to help with the set up and take down of the evening.
Cafe Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore and debate the latest ideas in science and technology.
