Cafe Sci: Antibiotic Resistance & its Implications

Monday 23 May 2016
19:00 to 21:00
The Tea Bar, 9-13 London Street, Basingstoke RG21 7NT
RG21 7NT       (Map)
England

Why not come along and find out what the future might hold for antibiotic resistance at tonight's talk titled "Antibiotic resistance and its Implications".  The talk will be lead by Dr John Broughallwho is a volunteer public engagement speaker for the charityAntibiotic Research UK.

SUMMARY

Dr. John Broughall, (pronounced as in a pub “brawl”), will discuss the issue of why the antibiotic development pipeline has dried up: what are the problems and why the pharmaceutical industry is not investing in research and development to produce new compounds. Multi-drug antibiotic resistance has been recognised as a global threat to health yet the solutions to this issue are not obvious, the current commercially driven pharmaceutical process does not appear fit for purpose.

The charity that John is representing tonight, Antibiotic Research UK, is proposing a new approach to overcome this impasse, he will discuss their plans and the science behind their proposal.

You will have the opportunity to make a donation towards the vital work of this charity to help redirect pharmaceutical research.

You can also find out more about the work of the charity at the web address below:

BIOGRAPHY

John is a PhD microbiologist who has spent most of his career in the diagnostics industry including the development of rapid and automated methods for use in microbiology laboratories. Latterly he has worked in the medical departments of two major pharmaceutical companies focusing on both antibiotics and also new oncology compounds. He now runs his own consultancy business but is also a volunteer for Antibiotic Research UK.

VENUE AND FORMAT

The Tea Bar will be open for at least half an hour before the talk which starts at 7.30pm, so you can get yourself a drink and have a chat with other participants. The discussions will aim to finish around 9.00pm, though everyone will be welcome to stay around and have a chat with the speaker afterwards ... and indulge in more of the Tea Bar's delicious cakes.

The format of the evening is usually a talk of 30 to 40 minutes, followed by a short break so the audience can refill their glasses, before questions and discussions about the talk.

Entry is free and open to everyone, but we do encourage you to buy a tea, coffee  and cakes to show your support for the The Tea Bar who sponsor the meeting by providing the venue.

Cafe Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore and debate the latest ideas in science and technology.
