Cafe Sci: "Waste management: the bigger picture"

Monday 4 Jan 2016
19:15 to 21:30
The Winchester Discovery Centre, Jewry Street, Winchester
England

Tonight's Cafe Sci in Winchester will be lead by Dr Tony Curran from the University of Southampton. Dr Tony Curran will be speaking about "Waste management: the bigger picture".

Summary:

The responsible management of earth’s resources has grown increasingly important in a world that is trying to reconcile improving prosperity whilst reducing impact on the environment. As the volume and complexity of waste continues to rise, so does the challenge to fuel economic development in a sustainable manner.

This talk will examine a few of the most significant waste flows and consider the bigger picture: where should waste reduction efforts be prioritised? How can we achieve improvements? Who is responsible? To what extent can society, and industry, move towards zero waste?

Biography:

Dr Tony Curran is a public engagement fellow at the University of Southampton. He runs the University’s Research Roadshow and Researchers’ Café as well as talks and interactive shows with environmental themes: the burger apocalypse, the sustainability game show, the future of energy and the future of waste. Tony completed a PhD in waste prevention and recovery in 2008 then between 2009-2014 conducted post-doctoral research on a large research project to move industry towards zero waste.

Format and Venue:

The Discovery Centre will be open for at least half an hour before the talk which starts at 7.45pm, so you can get yourself a drink and have a chat with other participants. The discussions will aim to finish around 9.15pm, though everyone will be welcome to stay around and have a chat with the speaker afterwards.

There is no charge for admission, but donations towards speakers expenses are welcome.  If anybody would like to help with the running of the Winchester Café Sci, please speak to the organizer William Vine on the evening.

The format of the evening is usually a talk of 30 to 40 minutes, followed by a short break so the audience can refill their glasses, before questions and discussions about the talk.   Entry is open to everyone, but we do encourage you to buy a tea, coffee  and cakes to show your support for the Discovery Centre who sponsor the meeting by providing the venue.

Cafe Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore and debate the latest ideas in science and technology.
